I think it’s so…
(for my daughter on her 7th birthday)
Questions are the way we learn,
asking’s how we know—
wonder’s but another way
to measure how we grow.
“How did people get on earth?
What is death, and what is birth?
Why do some flowers bloom and go,
and others sleep beneath the snow
and wait ‘till spring and then arise?
And is it true, I think it’s so
that nothing ever truly dies?”
But life’s not like those T.V. shows,
where someone asks and someone knows—
not even Dad, not even Mom.
So, let the questions lead you on.
Some say each question holds its answer,
like the pearl within the oyster.
Who is the wise man and who’s the fool,
and who will find the shining jewel?
Only those who ask the questions,
and wait like flowers beneath the snow?
I’m not really sure, but I think it’s so.
